How Do I Get This Look?

Great large bun: timeless yet made modern

Sarah Jessica Parker’s hair is a classic and timeless hairstyle.  It’s really quite easy if you have lots of hair like Sarah Jessica Parker.  For those of us who don’t have this much hair there are some great hairpieces that you can buyto help you fill in the back.

One of the first things you need is a good brush.  I like to use a Denman brush to make the pony tail.  Brush the hair away from the face and put the ponytail in the middle of the back of your head.  Note the brush lines in the sides of her hair. They do not go too severely upwards but more straight back.  If you have some frizzies around your hair, don’t worry we will take care of those later.

In this example of a large bun, a small part has been left in her hair to give a bit of interest and make it very modern.  No part might make it look old fashioned instead of timeless.

Quick tip – to get the nape of your hair nicely into a pony tail without it being saggy at the back – make sure to tilt your head back while you are brushing the nape hair – this will keep the nape area tight and get the hair securely into the elastic without any gaping.

Once you have  your hair into a nice pony tail, a bun is fairly easy to do in that all you have to do is wrap the existing hair around the pony tail and pin the round part into your hair all along the sides of the bun.

A few things to keep in mind:

Looking straight at her you can see the bun from the back.  This stops her hair from looking too severely pulled back and adds some softness to the hard lines of her face.  If your hair is not thick enough to do this (and for most of us this is the case!) then you will need to do a bit of back brushing in the pony tail before you wrap it around the elastic.

Before I start any back brushing or back combing I will spray the hair with hair spray.  This helps to give it some hold.  Back brushing requires a soft hand and gently but firmly inserting the bristles of the brush midway thru the pony and gently pulling towards the elastic.  Do this motion a few times and then repeat at the end of the pony tail pulling your brush only to the midpoint (where you started your first back brushing section).  Now you have hair that will stay better and mold more easily into the hair around the elastic.  Once you get the hair into a roundness that you like you need to pin the hair of the bun to the hair on your head.  Make sure to pin only where the bun meets your hair.

You can see in her bun that the hair was gently twisted as it was wound around the elastic.  In this picture it looks like there was some hair left out of the pony and was smoothed over the whole bun and then pinned.  I think if you are doing this at home with your own hair you could skip this part.

Now if you have some frizzies left around your face you can take a bit of Molding gum by Wella.  This is a product that you generally put into your dry hair to make it piecey or messy.  I will take a small amount and rub it into my hands enough to generate a bit of heat, that way I know that I am breaking down the product.  Very gently I will glaze my hands over the fuzzy bits making sure to keep my hand going in the direction the hair is going.  I will then hold my back brushing brush at a 45 degree angle and with a soft hand brush the frizzies down.  To make these fly aways even more secure I will spray the hair and then use my blow dryer to heat it up a bit.

If you have long hair this is a great style to know how to do.  It can take you from the office to a wedding to a prom!!

Hair Questions And Answers

Here are some questions that people have submitted recently, along with my answers:

What is the best way to be sure an up-do lasts – especially if the event is outside?

Having it done professionally is your best bet.  If that is not an option, here are some other tips:

Back comb really well, use a dry spray like Sebastian Shaper Plus on your hair before you start your up do, blow dry it in, make sure lots of your bobby pins are crisscrossed and finally use your blow dryer on your home up-do before you are done to test the wind factor.

What is the best shampoo for dry hair?

Dry hair needs lots of moisture.  The best way to get that is from the holy trinity – shampoo, conditioner and treatment.  If your hair is always dry then you really need to do treatments at home.  You can always ask your stylist which one is best for you.  (If they can’t answer that question then you need a new stylist!! Check us out – we are always happy to answer all questions and help you get your hair in shape)

How often should I wash my hair?

In general we over wash, so try cutting back.  Wash it was infrequently as you can get away with.

I want to grow my hair – what is the best plan to be sure it grows in healthy and shiny?

Get frequent trims.  Also be sure your stylist understands your goal to grow out your hair – they can help you select the best products and decide how often you need trims.

I want to grow out my bangs, how do I make sure they look good while they are growing?

The easiest bang to grow out is a side bang.  While you are training your bangs to fall in a different way I recommend using a little more gel or mousse on them and blow drying them first.  Also you can pin them with a bobby pin as you are styling the rest of your hair.

Ponytails never look as good on me as they do on everyone else.  How do you achieve the perfect ponytail?

Ah… the elusive perfect pony.  The secret is…..dirty hair and lots of back combing.  REALLY, my own pony tail looks best on super dirty hair and I back comb all my hair before brushing it into a pony tail.  Also this trick is worth taking the time to learn if you are after the party pony.  Attach two bobby pin to your elastic.  Pull your hair back into a pony and hold with one hand.  Take one of the bobby pins and secure it thru the base of the pony tail .  Then wrap the elastic around the pony tail and crisscross the other bobby pin thru the first one.  I have seen this demonstrated quite well on you tube if you need a visual.

I want to go bold with my color but I’m scared.  What do you suggest?  Is it a good idea to take hair risks?  What if it doesn’t work out?

The beautiful thing about hair colour is that you are not married to it.  As a colourist we love the challenge of a client who loves to change.  This keeps us excited.  The relationship with your stylist is key when deciding to go bold or not.  A good colourist will want to know your comfort level and should also explain thoroughly the pros and cons of the colour that you are considering.   Often hair colour is really easy to change without damaging your hair but your stylist needs to explain all this to you.  Consider budget as well.  A good stylist is one that not only does a great job cutting, colouring and styling but also one that will sit down and answer all your questions.

My hair looks great when you do it, but a couple days later I can never reproduce the look.  Where am I going wrong?

I really want my clients to be able to do their hair as well as I do it when they are at home.  The reality is that this is my profession.  It would be unreasonable to expect me to do your job and it’s therefore somewhat unreasonable to expect our clients to do as good a job on their hair as we do.  This Blog is a great resource for learning how to do your own hair but all the tips and techniques are useless if you are not willing to put in the time.  If I spend 20 minutes styling your hair then you can expect to add at least 10 minutes on to that to get even close to what we do in the salon, maybe more.  If this is a real problem for you then ask your stylist to style your hair naturally, using only the products you have at home and with the same tools you use at home.  At Village Hair Studio you can ask for a styling lesson where you actually hold the blow dryer and apply the products.  After a couple of these you will be amazed at how great you can make your hair look.

Best way to use mousse for straight hair.

“Family Style Servings” of mousse is what I recommend!

Let me explain…. You know how in a large family all the food goes on one plate and everyone helps themselves from that?  That is my philosophy for mousse too!

Take your mousse and give it a good shake.  It needs the shake to produce mousse that isn’t messy and wet.   Squirt out a tennis ball size of foam into your hand.  You’ll use your other hand to help yourself to what you need.

Use just a couple fingers on your other hand and take some mousse to apply throughout your hair – from root to end or just the root – all as needed based on your hair and the style you are going for.

Don’t worry if it does not dissipate immediately, for now we can leave a bit of white mousse in your hair.

When you have applied all the mousse you need,  use your hands and fingers and kinda mess up your hair or scrunch it to get the mousse really into your hair. I like to make sure that I have applied some mousse also to the ends of my hair because my hair is fine and the ends tend to be a bit skinny looking and I want them to be full looking.

My favourite mousse is Mousse Forte by Sebastian. It’s not really too strong despite its name.  It just gives a nice hold.

Now you are all moussed up and can have fun with your blow dry!!

Tips for Straightening Your Hair:

  • After you shower, towel dry and put in some silicone based serum.
  • Pull your hair into a clip and then remove inch-wide strands and straighten them one at a time — starting at the back and moving to the sides and then the front
  • Buy high quality tools. There is no short cut in this area. Get one that is thin, an inch to an inch and a half wide is the easiest to use.
  • If you are concerned about damage, add some more product to protect against heat damage.
  • The secret to shiny hair: iron your hair in front of an open window or a fan: it cools the hair shaft while it is straightened, leaving it shiny.
  • Finish with a light shine spray.

2012 Critics Choice Awards

It’s Award Season friends.  Shoes, jewels, dresses and HAIR.  Stay tuned as we share pics from the Red Carpets this award season.

What trends do you see?  Share your comments and let us know what you think.

At the Critics Choice Awards, we saw a lot of natural looking waves:

Elizabeth Olsen stunned with her simple waves and big smile.  She was radiant and natural looking.

Elle Fanning also went with simple waves, a little less sleek than Elizabeth – Elle went with the slightly messy look.  It worked with her outfit.

Sandra Bullock always stuns and going natural is usually her best bet, with slightly sharp facial features.

And Judy Greer stunned in a simple, yet elegant and totally natural half up do (she doesn’t look over-done – she looks like she threw it up and is ready to have a good time – easy elegance – I’m a big fan!)

Get This Look

This is a super cute cut that is versatile.  With just a few modifications, it will work on any shape face.

This style requires layers to prevent it from looking too triangular when you curl it.  Note:  It’s a couple of inches longer than it appears as the curls make it bounce up.

If you are lucky enough to already have these beachy type waves then you are off to the races.  You can probably wash and wear.  If this is the case then you might want to use a leave in conditioner to help the ends from being frizzy.  A classic is Potion 9 by Sebastian or Potion 9 Lite for finer hair types.

To support the curl I would recommend a product like Whipped Creme by Wella.  It dries nicely without needing to be blowdryed out and it also has some conditioning properties.

Another option is Texturizer by Sebastian.  It has more hold than Whipped Creme but will also dry softly without that brittle look.  Try as you might to avoid the brittle shell on your hair, if it does happen simply wait until your hair is completely dry then put your fingers at the root and shake out the curls.

My guess is the hair in this picture has been curled with a medium sized curling iron.  Instead of using the iron in the traditional way wrap the hair around the iron instead of using the clamp.  This allows the ends to remain a bit straighter and have that flicky look.    If you look carefully at the picture you can identify the “s” waves in the hair.

TIP: A good way to prep for styling your hair this way is to scrunch it first with a nice mouse like Mousse Forte by Sebastian or Mousse by Wella.  Both have a nice hold factor without making your hair crunchy.

Then take a minute to look at the curls in your hair, without disturbing the wave pattern too much, separate some of the waves from each other and wrap the wave sections around the barrel of your curling iron – making sure not to burn your fingertips ( this is when I am really happy to have gel nails!).

There are a lot of wand irons being sold that include heat resistant gloves.  You could use these gloves but I would still use a traditional iron.

If you need a little more hold than the mouse gives you then use a dry hair spray like Sebastian Shaper and from a distance spray each wave pattern after you have curled it, this will help to set your hair and give it a longer lasting look.

The 2 most important things to remember:  playing with your hair should be fun, give it a try and don’t stress if it takes some practice and last, we are always here if you want a style lesson!

Hair FAQ

Here are some questions we’ve gotten recently, along with the answers.

I get the worst split ends. How can I prevent them?

Here’s a great tip that’s easy! Coat them with conditioner before you jump in the shower. This will seal in moisture and prevent shampoo from stripping away natural oils from the tips.

How can I make my natural curls look defined all day?

The less you touch and mess with your curls, the longer they’ll stay free-free.  So hands off ladies!  Once your styling is done – no playing with your hair.  During the styling process, go simple – don’t over-style!  You can also use products to help with frizzy hair.  Check out our line of great products designed just for that (http://www.thevillagehairstudio.com/hair-dresser-products.htm).  If your hair starts to misbehave during the day, touch up tendrils with a few spritzes of water and a little bit of pomade.

I can never get the back of my hair to look right when I blow-dry it.

Clip up the top of your strands before blow-drying. Working from the bottom up, unfasten layers 2 inches wide and dry each portion completely.  It’ll take some practice but clipping definitely makes it easier so you are only dealing with hair one section at a time.

Is it damaging to wear your hair in a ponytail every day?

We love the ease and elegance of a ponytail but unfortunately, you can damage your hair if you do it every single day.  BUT if you practice some care, you can still do it!  To stop ponytail breakage, follow these two rules:

Always use bands that are covered with a fabric like silk or cotton (never use rubber or plastic) and that don’t have any hair-snagging metal pieces

Next, always spritz a light silicone spray over your tresses before you put your hair up, so your locks will glide against the band without splitting.

Nights Out: Hair That Is Fun, Sexy Or Glamorous

Looking for some quick ways to change your hair for a night out.

First of all, I encourage you to just have some fun.  Play around and see what looks good on you.

Need a little help?   Book a style lesson and we’ll teach you how to do a couple fun dos for your nights out.

A few quick suggestions:

Amanda Seyfried captures the grace and sophistication of a Veronica Lake hair style

Create drama by just changing your part: create drama and old Hollywood sophistication (a la Veronica Lake) by going for a much lower part on the side.  You can pin one side back behind your ear and create some big, gentle curls in the front.  It’s simple and the height of sophistication.

Some other looks that are similar but you can play around to get a little variation:

Sweep bangs over to one side, use product or a pin to hold them in place.  Changing your bangs alters the look of your face.  Leave your hair straight or curly or whatever you want.  Try playing with your bangs and seeing what you can do to get different looks.

Bust out the curling iron to create sexy drama.  Curl the ends using big vertical sections.  Then all you have to do is let the curls cool down and then brush them out.  You’ll love the fullness.

Blonding. YOU Can Be A Blond!

There are about as many different ways to be blonde as there are famous blondes in history.

Blonding can be complicated and damaging but when done right there is nothing quite like it.

It is easy for people who are naturally blonde to be blonder.  For this hair type we can use simple colours or even high lift blond colour as high lights.  The processing usually takes as long as a colour. Foils do take longer to put in, so in general you will spend more time in the salon per visit but you will require fewer visits per year to maintain.   Think Christie Brinkley.  She is naturally blond but has beautiful golden blond and honey blond highlights.

For clients who start out with darker hair – you can be blond too.  Think Jennifer Anniston.  She is a brunette naturally but her high lights are done with stronger colours and most likely lifter (bleach).  A lot of people have misconceptions about lifter because we have all heard horror stories about people who have broken off their hair using bleach.  In the right hands and done professionally lifter is an important tool for the hairstylist.  It allows us to create beautiful blonds on people whose hair does not naturally want to be blond or tends to go a brassy blond.

On its own lifter can create a beautiful colour but we also have the option of toning it.  Toners are demi-permanent hair colour that has no ammonia.  It adds a slight tone to highlighted hair.  It cannot make dark hair light but it can make dark hair super shiny.  One of the best ways to add shine to your hair is to use a demi permanent colour.  You can have it done as a shine treatment or simply a toner.

Say you don’t really like the word “natural” and you want a blond that really turns heads – think Gwen Steffani.  Her hair is a full head of lifter and then toned.  The lifter is applied like a traditional colour to the roots, then left on for a very specific amount of time, rinsed then toned.  This is more advanced process and you really want a good colourist doing this.  It can be very hard on your hair and requires commitment to treatments, both at home and at the salon.  It also needs you to be diligent about getting your hair done on time and not leaving it for any extra length of time.  However all this being said it can be truly the most stunning of colours.

Many famous blonds were full head lifter (salon speak for bleach blonds!). Think Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson, Anna Nicole Smith and of course the most famous – Marilyn!!!
